The Gunas

The Gunas are divided into three realms. I will first quote Syl Carson on her description and add some of my own understanding.
Sattva- "is the mind and cognitive senses. It is the coordinates of all biological and psychic activities that keep us connected to the physical world. (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin) the bridge to the outside." from Syl
This is a place I greatly lack. I hope as I learn more about the gunas I can improve upon these energies in my body. Sattva movement is side to side like the gentle swaying of a tree. Sattva is divine or godly nature. when strong in us sattva makes us balanced, pragmatic, truth filled and self realized.
Rajas-"motor response and physical experience. When this guna is predominating the senses of yearning-voice, hands. feet, anus and genitals become active"
Rajastic motion is front to back. It is something I have a lot of. When raja dominates it makes us emotional; can make us angry willful and manipulative.
Tamas- "darkness and inertia. When this guna is predominate the subtle elements become activated such as: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Which give rise to the structures of existence."
This is the other guna I am strong in. An over powerful tamasic energy makes us slothful, inattentive, low vitality, and low mental acuity. It makes us feel heavy and lethargic inside.

There is a place for all the gunas. They also apply to the specific positions in yoga or asanas. I look forward to learning about them more. Different positions can increase, balance, or decrease the energies of the gunas. When i learn more i will teach you more.
